“From factionalism to sexual harassment, AAP Punjab is never free from controversies”
AAP’s charter principle on gender equality says, “Aam Aadmi Party is fully committed to the principles of gender equity and will represent women amply at all levels of party organization”. But in complete contradiction to party’s stand, the Aam Aadmi Party is facing protests over multiple women’s welfare issues.
Party MLA and former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti faced imminent arrest in wake of complaint filed by his wife, Lipika Mitra, accusing him of attempt to murder and domestic violence. And if that was not enough to be a blot on party’s face then another case of sexual misconduct surfaced within the party to add yet another embarrassment.
The latest victim of the Arvind Kejriwal’s party is Amandeep Kaur, a state committee member of the women’s wing of the AAP, Punjab. Amandeep resigned from party alleging that there was no respect and safety of women in the party. She was earlier the convener of three Punjab Lok Sabha constituencies including Ferozepur, Faridkot and Khadur Sahib. Amandeep had made serious allegations against three male members of the party accusing them of harassment and trying to defame her in the social media.
Amandeep alleged that her written complaints to Punjab AAP convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur, state affairs in-charge Sanjay Singh and Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia failed to yield any results and nobody paid heed to her pleas. To her shock even the women wing of AAP in Punjab was not serious on the issue.
When Amandeep was let down by party leaders in taking action against the accused volunteers, she filed a harassment and eve teasing complaint with Ferozepur police. The police summoned the three accused AAP volunteers. But, Sucha Singh Chhotepur called her and requested her to withdraw the complaint with the assurance that he would take action against them.
Amandeep later led a protest and went to Delhi to plead in front of Kejriwal but unfortunately both Kejriwal and deputy CM, Manish Sisodia refused to meet her.
A clear indication of insensitive attitude of Aam Adam Party on gender issues, party high command in both the cases chose to remain silent.
When Nirbhaya rape case happened on December 16, 2012 in Delhi then the person who had raised his voice most vociferously was none other than Arvind Kejriwal. It gave an indication that he stands for women’s rights and the same was expected from his political party. But, the insensitive attitude of party on women’s issues depicts a stark reality!
