Since Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has come to power in February 2015, at least 12 AAP MLAs have been arrested and another 15 booked by Delhi Police on a variety of charges in the past 19 months.
Day by day, the number of legislators caught in legal trouble has been increasing, with the latest arrest being within a gap of two days that of MLA Somnath Bharti and legislator Amanatullah Khan. Both of these MLAs were arrested for the second time.
The arrests and booking entail:
Malviya Nagar MLA Somnath Bharti
Earlier this month, Somnath Bharti allegedly assaulted security staff at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Before which, he was arrested in September of 2015 after his wife, Lipika Mitra, filed cases of attempt to murder, domestic violence and cheating against him.
Prior to this, two other cases had been lodged against him, connecting him to the midnight Khirki Extension raid in 2014 where African women allegedly molested and manhandled by Bharti’s led mob.
Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan
Khan was first arrested on July 24th this year, for allegedly threatening a woman, who had come to house to discuss the issue of power cuts, with rape and murder. The same woman also claimed that Khan’s men stalked her and threatened to kidnap her children and that on one occasion, Khan tried to run her over with his car.
He was sent to a 14-day judicial custody and released on bail.
Just this Wednesday, Khan was arrested again on charges made by his very own relative of sexual harassment. She alleged that he forced her to indulge in physical relations with him. She also complained that her husband demanded dowry and ordered her to do as Khan asked.
